The Art of Audrey Niffenegger

One of my favorite writers, Audrey Niffenegger — author of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry — also happens to be an artist. Her work is dark and sad and otherworldly, evoking a tone similar to her novels. It’s not a tone I typically gravitate toward, but for some reason I love her prints.

Don’t they have this eery air of foreboding? The one in the top left hand corner is my favorite, partially because it’s so enigmatic. A man I worked for once owned a print of it and I could have spent hours staring at it. It’s beautiful, for sure, but what is really going on in that scene? It’s totally mesmerizing.

Heads up: Niffenegger’s new book, Raven Girl, is out May 9th!

  1. I had a Niffenegger print in my office when you were helping me out–did you ever see it? I know you are unemployed, but when you get a job you might treat yourself to the purchase of a Niffenegger print. I think one can be had for as little as $600. Here main dealer is based in Chicago where she lives–the gallery is called Print Works. They have a good website with prices for all their artists. Enjoy!

    • Yes, I did see it! I talk about it in the post. It’s a print of the image in the upper right hand corner. I remember us having a conversation about it and you saying that it wasn’t that expensive. One day, I’d love to own a print.
